Lumbini International School was founded in 2006 by Dr. Thant Lwin Maung (pen name Ko Tar) and his close friend Dr. Tin Hlaing (pen name Phoe Hlaing), with the shared vision of nurturing the multi-dimensional intelligence of students in Myanmar. The school was established to offer a world-class education that harmonizes academic excellence with cultural grounding, accessible to families at an affordable cost.
The inspiration for Lumbini emerged during the founders’ visit to Bhavan’s Indian International School (BIIS) in Singapore, a school renowned for its rigorous curriculum, modest tuition, and strong emphasis on tradition, language, history, and culture. BIIS, part of a legacy institution with alumni such as Mahatma Gandhi, Mother Teresa, Indira Gandhi, and Lord Louis Mountbatten, impressed the founders with its diverse international student body and high academic outcomes, with students regularly accepted into top universities in the US, UK, Singapore, and India.
Modeling these strengths, Lumbini International School offers a bilingual education in Burmese and English, rooted in both global best practices and the richness of Myanmar’s heritage. The school is officially approved and licensed by the Ministry of Education of Myanmar, and is a Pearson Edexcel–approved international school and licensed Test Center, providing students with internationally recognized academic qualifications and pathways.
At its core, Lumbini is committed to shaping lifelong learners, adaptable global citizens, and leaders with a polished Myanmar identity—students who can thrive both in their local communities and on the world stage.
